A Lagos State Magistrate court has sentenced 8 individuals to one month imprisonment over indiscriminate waste disposal.
Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab revealed that the individuals were arraigned on April 27, before the magistrate court sitting at Bolade Oshodi for indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
Following their arraignment, they all reportedly pled guilty after which they were convicted and sentenced to one month in prison.
The move comes as part of the Lagos State Government’s increasing efforts to address indiscriminate dumping of refuse across the state.
Meanwhile, the latest action has attracted mixed reactions from social media users arguing that the sentence may be excessive.
FinTech professional Vincent Ossy said;
Sentenced them to one month in prison for indiscriminate dumping of refuse; which could have been better if they made them do public sanitation for that one month to serve their time. You people don’t even think like progressives at all.
Legal practitioner Chinalu Okorie added that;
Looking at the nature of the offence and the fact that the convicts are first-time offenders, I strongly believe that community service is the best option in this circumstance. To achieve the purpose of prison decongestion, non custodial approach shall always be first considered before custodial punishment.
