Man Arrested for Allegedly Setting Wife Ablaze in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man, Jacob Irewa, over the alleged attempted killing of his wife, Berida Irawo, following a domestic dispute at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m.

Police Respond to Incident

According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat, the B Division Surveillance Team in Felele received a report of the incident and immediately mobilised to the scene.

“On Friday, 14th August 2026, at about 2030 hours, the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received a report of the incident and immediately mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested,” Afusat said.

Dispute Escalated Into Attack

Preliminary investigation by the police indicated that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after the victim allegedly burnt some of the suspect’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using.

According to the police, the suspect subsequently threatened his wife, obtained petrol from his motorcycle and allegedly set her on fire.

The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele, according to the police.

Suspect Admits Setting Wife Ablaze

The police spokesperson said the suspect admitted to the act during preliminary interrogation.

“The suspect, in his statement to the Police, admitted to setting his wife ablaze,” Afusat said.

She added that the command had commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and gather additional evidence.

CP Condemns Domestic Violence

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the incident and reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance towards violence, particularly domestic violence.

He urged residents to resolve domestic disagreements through lawful means rather than resorting to actions capable of putting lives at risk.

“The Kogi State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that persons responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice,” the PPRO quoted the commissioner as saying.

Suspect to Face Prosecution

The police said Irewa would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The command also appealed to members of the public to avoid violence during domestic disputes and to seek appropriate intervention when conflicts escalate.
