“My Administration Has Pulled Nigeria Back From Bankruptcy” – President Tinubu reveals

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said his administration stabilised Nigeria and rescued the country’s economy from the brink of bankruptcy through a series of economic reforms implemented since he assumed office in May 2023.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Tinubu said his government inherited severe economic challenges but has taken difficult decisions to restore stability and lay the foundation for long-term growth.

Tinubu explained that the reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidy, the unification of the foreign exchange market, and efforts to improve government revenue were necessary to prevent economic collapse.

The President said his administration has also strengthened Nigeria’s security architecture, leading to improved safety in many parts of the country. He added that the government has expanded access to higher education through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), noting that thousands of students have benefited from the scheme.

Tinubu further pointed to the absence of ongoing strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), describing it as evidence of improved engagement with tertiary institutions. He also highlighted the establishment of new universities as part of efforts to broaden educational opportunities for Nigerians. According to him, the measures have begun to yield positive results despite the temporary hardship experienced by many Nigerians.

Responding, the Catholic bishops acknowledged the government’s efforts but expressed concern over the rising cost of living, widespread poverty, insecurity, and the challenges many young Nigerians face in accessing tertiary education. They also stressed the importance of ensuring that the 2027 general elections are free, fair, and credible to strengthen public confidence in the country’s democratic process. They urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to address the nation’s socio-economic challenges and improve the living conditions of citizens.

Acknowledging the economic difficulties facing citizens, He appealed for patience and understanding, echoing that the sacrifices would produce lasting benefits for the country. He maintained that the administration remains committed to reducing inflation, creating jobs, improving security, and attracting local and foreign investments.

Addressing the Catholic bishops, the President reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive governance and national unity, urging religious leaders to continue praying for the country and supporting efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability, and development.
