NUT Suspends Oyo Teachers’ Strike, Orders Resumption on Thursday

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended its strike across public schools in Oyo State, directing members to resume work on Thursday.

The action follows renewed engagements with the state government and assurances of improved security after the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.

The new development was revealed in a statement jointly signed on Wednesday by the union’s Oyo State Chairman, Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and Secretary, Olukayode Salami, in which the union stated that the decision followed a directive from its national leadership after reviewing the prevailing security situation.

However, the NUT in turn instructed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to resume official duties from Thursday, July 2, 2026. The development which serves as an end to the union action declared in response to the kidnapping of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.

The statement further explained that the decision was made in the collective interest of teachers, learners, and the general public after receiving assurances from the Oyo State Government.

Recall that, the Government had earlier summoned the NUT to suspend the strikes, and approved ₦210billion naira supplementary budget. While also stressed further that efforts were being intensified to secure the safe release of the abducted victims and reinforce security in schools and surrounding communities.
