The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspect involved in the production of methanol following the recent mysterious death of 29 individuals.
According to the Police, the suspect, Oloruntoba Babatunde aka Meko, produces substances suspected to contain methanol.
“Substances suspected to be methanol were also recovered and have been subjected to further investigation and necessary forensic examination to establish their exact composition and determine any possible link to the reported deaths,” the Police stated.
Babatunde’s arrest follows the recent death of 29 youths in Araromi-Obu, Odigbo Local Government Area, Ondo State. Reports alleged that the victims lost their lives after consuming certain alcoholic drinks and herbal concoctions.
The Ondo State Police Spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh disclosed that the command has contained the situation. As such, security, medical and investigative interventions are currently ongoing with post-mortem examinations and forensic tests.
The Command furthered that several youths in the community have also been taken to the local government’s medical facility for tests and treatment.
Amid this, the police also arrested 14 suspected sellers and consumers of suspicious drinks and concoctions. The suspects were apprehended across Ore and Odigbo during an enforcement operation by the State Criminal Investigation Department, Akure.
