Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force have reportedly arrested Joy Ezeugwu, a nursing student who recently exposed the poor conditions of the health centre she was posted to.
Last month, Ezeugwu, an Ezzy College of Nursing Sciences student expressed concerns about her posting location. She revealed that the health centre – Uwani Health Centre in Enugu had no electricity, running water, or proper sanitation.
Following the post, the school suspended her indefinitely. The school’s administrator, Ifeyinwa Peace Okwudu also reportedly threatened a N10 million lawsuit for reputational harm.
However, education advocate Alex Onyia reported that the police have arrested Ezeugwu based on complaints from the school administrator.
While the charges aren’t yet public, the alleged arrest has already sparked widespread calls for her release. The calls align with beliefs that whistleblowers are increasingly at risk in Nigeria.
