The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has launched the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to enhance its response to serious and violent crimes.
Police Inspector General Olatunji Disu revealed during an emergency conference that the VCRU represents a restructured tactical formation.
He noted that the Unit will operate strictly on intelligence-based deployment, supported by specialized training, human rights compliance, and structured accountability, with Commissioners of Police bearing direct responsibility for its oversight.
The move comes as part of an ongoing effort by the Police leadership to reform the law enforcement agency.
Additionally, the IGP ordered all police officers on duty to always wear their name tags. He emphasized that he and other top police leadership members usually wear their names. As such, all officers must have their name tags at all times.
The directive follows continued reports over improper dressing among some Police officers who usually cover or remove their name tags while on duty.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General further also directed all Commissioners of Police to strengthen community policing through regular town hall engagements with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community groups.
He also mandated that Commissioners make their contact details accessible to community leaders to improve communication and public trust.
