Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has officially banned the activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) across the state following the killing of a transport union leader in Ile-Ife.
The governor announced the proscription following the death of Mr Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Ajagungbade Emir, who was shot dead on Sunday during a clash involving suspected hoodlums over control of a garage in the ancient city.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke directed the Commissioner of Police to immediately arrest all individuals involved in the killing and ensure they face the law.
The governor also ordered all warring factions to vacate motor parks across the state as part of measures to prevent further violence. He directed security agencies to restore normalcy and maintain law and order in motor parks, stressing the need to halt clashes capable of threatening public safety.
As part of efforts to address the crisis and prevent a recurrence, Adeleke announced the reintroduction of the Park Management System across Osun State.
The Executive Order backing the Park Management System is expected to clarify the framework for managing motor parks and provide legal support for the new arrangement.
However, the development marks a fresh move by the Osun State Government to address violence associated with transport union activities and ensure that motor parks operate in an orderly manner.
The government’s position is that the restoration of peace and security remains essential to protecting lives, maintaining public order and ensuring the smooth movement of people and goods across the state. Also, Adeleke’s directive seeks to curb violence linked to transport union activities and restore order in the state’s motor parks.
