The immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) president of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), James Adio, has regained his freedom after being remanded by the Magistrate Court in Ekiti State.
The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Akinteye Babatunde, confirmed the freedom via his X handle on Friday, 31st July. He added that he had spoken directly with the former student leader and confirmed that he was doing well.
According to Babatunde the outcome was a victory for justice in which the NANS Joint Campus Committee Chairman in Ekiti State and the NANS National Head of Administration for their roles is highly commended.
NANS had earlier called the remand a miscarriage of justice. It said Adio was the complainant in the case (with no criminal charges against him) and that the matter was turned against him by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the magistrate. The association had directed members in Ekiti to mobilise for peaceful protests and threatened actions at the courts and DPP office.
In the statements issued earlier by the NANS, Adio had approached the court over alleged cyberbullying and the non-consensual recording/circulation of private, consensual moments between him and another adult. The proceedings before Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun (Magistrate Court, Fajuyi, Ado-Ekiti) reportedly shifted focus, leading to Adio’s remand (alongside defendants) until around August 4, 2026. NANS also alleged differing treatment by the university regarding suspension.Â
However, exact details of the release mechanism have not been officially disclosed by the court or Ekiti State Ministry of Justice.
Recall that Adio had previously faced university suspension (alongside others) in June 2026 over alleged involvement in unauthorised collection of practical fees from students, with claims involving funds traced to his account. He was later reinstated following NANS engagement with university management.Â
