The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has debunked rumors that it prevented an Hijab-wearing candidate from writing her exam.
JAMB spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin revealed that the Hijab candidate was allowed to sit for the examination contrary to the impression being circulated.
According to him;
โThe Board will not, under any circumstances, allow a candidate to be denied her rights on the basis of her faith, as this is protected under the Constitution. We will continue to emphasize to all officials, including staff and ad hoc personnel, the importance of respecting these rights.โ
The statement follows a trending video showing a security agent denying an Hijabi candidate from entering the examination centre. The incident, which occurred at the Esther Oshikoya CBT Centre in Ibadan quickly drew backlash from different quarters.
Dr. Fabian noted that the act was neither perpetrated by the centre nor part of its official protocol. Instead, it was executed by an overzealous ad hoc staff member who failed to adhere to JAMB’s guidelines on religious attire.
