Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has received the chieftaincy title “Ugoeze Anambra”, meaning “Royal Eagle” or “Glory of the King,” from the traditional rulers of Anambra State.
The honour was conferred on the First Lady during her one day visit to the state, where she launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-East during her one-day visit to the state.
The traditional rulers’ council, led by Igwe Chidubem Iweka, cited the first lady’s humanitarian initiatives and support for the administration as reasons for conferring the title on her.
During the visit, the First Lady also distributed empowerment grants and tools to 5,000 beneficiaries as part of efforts to support vulnerable people and promote economic empowerment in the region.
The traditional rulers said the title recognised Tinubu’s contributions to humanitarian development and her efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerians. The honour follows a similar recognition previously given to President Bola Tinubu by traditional rulers in Anambra State.
She subsequently launched the food bank programme in Amawbia, aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, including young children and mothers. The National Community Food Bank Programme forms part of the Federal Government’s social intervention efforts aimed at improving food access and supporting vulnerable households across the country.
As part of her visit, Oluremi also commissioned a TETFund Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, to support digital skills development and training.
Speaking during the visit, the First Lady reflected on her relationship with the Igbo people, recalling her school days and expressing support for national unity.
She urged Nigerians to promote peaceful coexistence and strengthen unity across ethnic and regional lines.
However, her comments sparked discussions online, with some users drawing attention to a 2019 video in which she reportedly spoke about chasing Igbo residents from Lagos.
The First Lady’s visit combined the launch of a social intervention programme, the commissioning of an ICT facility and engagements with traditional and political leaders in the state.
