OAU Students begin 72-hour lecture boycott over school’s worsening transport crisis

The Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife have commenced a 72-hour lecture boycott over the worsening situation of the school’s newly adopted transport system.

According to the Students’ Union, the boycott is scheduled to run from Tuesday April 14 to Thursday, April 16, 2026.

The boycott follows weeks of complaints from students over the disruption, delays, and increased costs caused by the new system.

On March 29, the university introduced a new transport system after receiving donation of new CNG buses and tricycles from Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

However, the move which was supposed to improve transportation has triggered significance challenges for students. The new system caused commercial buses initially operating on campus to withdraw from campus routes, leaving students to rely on the new vehicles.

Videos circulating on social media shows OAU students and other university community members now queue for long to wait for vehicles.

Meanwhile, the Students’ Union has expressed readiness to escalate the situation to protests and other actions if the issues are not addressed.
