Police Arrest Man Found Unconscious Inside Transformer After Electric Shock in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man, Nnaji Chidiebere, who was allegedly found unconscious inside a transformer while attempting to vandalise the equipment in Obollo-Afor, Udenu Local Government Area of the state.

Chidiebere was arrested on Monday, August 17, 2026, after residents alerted the police that a man had been trapped inside a transformer along Ogbaike Road.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the incident occurred at about 2:20 p.m.

Ndukwe said police operatives attached to the Udenu Police Division were immediately deployed to the scene following the alert.

He said the officers found the suspect unconscious and suffering from various degrees of burns, after apparently sustaining an electric shock.

“The suspect was immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital, where he was resuscitated and subsequently referred to a specialist hospital for further treatment,” the statement said.

The police spokesperson said the suspect regained consciousness after receiving medical attention and identified himself as Nnaji Chidiebere.

“Upon regaining consciousness, the suspect identified himself as Nnaji Chidiebere and stated that he had been alone at the scene,” Ndukwe said.

However, preliminary investigations have reportedly linked Chidiebere to the alleged vandalism of transformers in the area.

The command said investigators were working to establish the full extent of his activities and determine whether other individuals were involved.

“Further investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of his activities, identify possible accomplices, and facilitate his prosecution,” Ndukwe added.

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended residents who alerted the police, saying their prompt intervention enabled officers to locate and rescue the suspect.

Giwa also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and urged residents to report suspicious activities to security agencies.

The police said the incident underscored the importance of community cooperation in preventing the vandalism of electricity infrastructure and other public assets.
