The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has arrested an X user, identified by the handle @haifah_er_abb, over an alleged false report claiming that fintech company OPay was shutting down its operations in Nigeria.
The arrest followed the circulation of a purported document on social media which claimed that OPay had been ordered to cease operations.
The post reportedly gained attention online, prompting concerns among customers and other users of the digital payment platform.
OPay Raises Alarm
The development came after OPay raised concerns over the circulation of the alleged false document and urged law enforcement authorities to investigate its source.
Reports indicate that the fintech company contacted the relevant authorities after the document began making the rounds online.
OPay subsequently called for the involvement of security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services, to investigate the matter and determine those behind the publication.
Police Trace Post To X User
The investigation reportedly led the NPF-NCCC to the X account of @haifah_er_abb, who was subsequently arrested.
The suspect was accused of publishing and circulating the false information capable of causing confusion and undermining confidence in OPay’s operations.
The development has since generated reactions online, with some users questioning the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
