Prophetess sparks outrage over plan to cane member accused of theft

A Nigerian prophetess has stirred widespread reactions online after she threatened to physically punish a young female member accused of stealing from her mother.

The prophetess, who is associated with a Pentecostal church, stated that she intended to administer 24 strokes of the cane as punishment. According to her, the physical pain would serve as a lasting reminder to deter the accused from stealing again.

“I’m going to flog her 24 times. Anytime she remember that injury, she no go get mind to thief again.” She said.

The video has since stirred intense debate across social media, with many condemning the act as excessive and inappropriate, particularly because it involves public exposure and alleged physical discipline.

Several critics argued that such punishment amounts to public shaming and questioned the role of parents in disciplining their children.

“A failed parent leaves discipline to the church. You role as a parent is to raise your own child.”

However, some users argue otherwise, commending the actions while describing it as a strict but necessary discipline.

“That’s discipline, and it’s very much acceptable… Next time, she isn’t stealing. Lack of this in this our current generation is the reason we see spoilt brats everywhere.”

Others raised concerns about the decision to record and share the incident online, questioning whether similar actions would be taken if it involved the prophetess’s own family members.

“Why must she be videoed and posted on social media? Has the pastor herself ever video her sons and daughters being punished for stealing or fornicating in church and recorded and posted on social media for clout?
