Nigerian filmmaker and film critic Tolu Fagbure has sparked debate after praising actress Wunmi Toriola while comparing her to fellow Nollywood stars Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe, and Toyin Abraham.
Fagbure claimed that Toriola is “better than Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe and Toyin Abraham put together” when it comes to acting while describing her as “the wisest of them all.”
Speaking in an interview, he praised Wunmi’s film Queen Lateefah, arguing that it was a superior production. According to him, one of the reasons the film stood out was because Toriola did not credit herself as its producer. Rather she entrusted the role to Judith Audu, whom he credited for handling the production.
Fagbure further alleged that Toriola made the decision because she recognized her own limitations, saying she “knows she’s not capable.”
However, Fagbure’s remark has generated mixed reactions among fans of the actresses on social media. While many people questioned his instances criticizing his opinions, some others supported his motion.
“Make this egbon dey watch film for night alone, cos he no fit dey see wetin everybody dey see – that said jokingly, a real film critic won’t over exaggerate, the moment he said the three of put together, he watered down every sense of honesty in his analysis” A user commented.
Another user opined:
He made good points but i disagree with the fact that Wunmi acts better than Toyin and Mercy sha o. Those two are versatile please. It’s not about shouting and fighting scene o.
A third user commented, arguing while referring to Toyin Abraham 2025 Cinema debut movie.
“This man said what we discussed yesterday when watching Iyalode by Toyin Abraham. That role in Iyalode doesn’t fit Toyin, she should have given it to someone else.”
Notably, as of the time of this report, Wumi Toriola, Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe, and Toyin Abraham have not publicly reacted to Tolu Fagbure’s comments.
