The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has spiked up across Nigeria, to ₦2,400 per kilogram deepening groans of hardships in Nigeria households.
The latest increase has sparked concerns among consumers, many of whom rely on cooking gas as their primary source of domestic energy.
According to Punch, Residents lament the rising cost, stretching household budgets already burdened by high food prices, transportation costs, and other living expenses. Some consumers reported that refilling gas cylinders now costs significantly more than it did a few weeks ago in which the price hit N1,500 from N1,300.
It was gathered that cooking gas prices varied widely across outlets with filling stations selling between N1,650 and N1,900 per kilogram. While some local retailers charge up to N2,400/kg in the neighborhood.
Notably, Amid rising prices and inconsistent supply, the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers warned that the country may experience a scarcity of cooking gas if the trend persists.
The association further noted that persistent supply and pricing challenges could trigger social discontent. While eroding years of efforts to encourage households to embrace cleaner cooking alternatives.
However, the rising cost of LPG comes amid broader economic challenges facing Nigerians. And it has further deepening concerns about the country’s cost of living.
