Nigerian streamer couple Peller and Jarvis have countered popular rapper Ycee over his recent comment on the country’s Olodo Uprising and Peller Culture.
Ycee in a recent podcast expressed concern that Nigeria is experiencing a wave of anti-intellectualism. He noted that the country is now rewarding ignorance while neglecting education and academic excellence, leading to an Olodo Uprising.
The rapper explained that Nigeria’s educational sector is already plagued with multiple challenges. These range from insecurity to poor leadership, and a declining societal value on education.
He argued that young people are now being discouraged from pursuing education because they no longer see a clear pathway to success there. Instead, they now see success as being linked to internet fraud, social media fame, and controversial online content rather than hard work and learning.
Ycee also mentioned what he described as the “Peller Culture” which sends the wrong message to impressionable youths. He opined that this is especially concerning as fame and financial rewards are now attached to online sensations.
While noting that he has no personal issues against Peller, he remarked that building on internet trends may not have long-term sustainability.
Nevertheless, Peller has taken the issue as a personal attack, describing Ycee as an “anyhow OG.” He added that some OGs don’t deserve respect because they beg him to promote their songs.
He furthered in another post that;
If you be elderly person respect yourself. Also must you mention my name? U sef na illiterate because as an elderly man that have sense u can talk without mentioning names.
Meanwhile, Peller’s partner, Jarvis, argued that some content creators are educated individuals who struggled to find jobs.
“Me that went to school, I graduated, and government no give us work now, what do you expect us to do? What do you expect us to do, sir? Go and tell that to your president.”
“You cannot expect us to have IQ and high knowledge, and at the end of the day, with all the knowledge and everything, we’ll end up cleaning toilets.”
Jarvis stressed that many young people are simply trying to survive through legitimate means rather than turning to crime. The content creator also opposed claims that content creators do not value education, using herself as an example.
“You are telling us that we don’t want to have education? Okay, me that graduated, me that went to school. Yes, hello, I went to school. Graduate. And how is it now?”
