The Oyo State Executive Council (ExCo) has appealed to the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) to allow students return to school by suspending actions that could further disrupt the academic calendar across the state.

According to the statement issued following a meeting held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the council stated that the state government is taking strategic measures to bring the kidnapping incident in Oriire Local Government Area to a successful resolution and restore normalcy.

The council also made known the approval of ₦8.77 billion in the first instance for the procurement of teaching and learning materials.

According to the government, successful implementation of the programme will qualify Oyo State for a reward-based disbursement of $2 per pupil per subject under the project’s results-based financing arrangement. The total value of the project which stands at ₦23.01 billion.

In a major fiscal decision, the council also announced the approval of a supplementary budget of ₦210 billion for the 2026 financial year to facilitate the completion of ongoing projects before the end of the current administration. Noting that the approval increases the state’s 2026 budget from ₦892.09 billion to ₦1.10 trillion.

However, the Executive Council further highlighted the approval of payment of $250,000 to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) initiative as part of efforts to position Oyo State to attract investments from across the African continent.

The council also approved ₦5.91 billion for the implementation of the 2026 work plan covering the Health Insurance and Food Security components of the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) programme.

Recall that, the SAfER initiative was launched by Seyi Makinde in 2023 to ease the economic effects following removal of the fuel subsidy and support vulnerable residents across the state.
